Dave Payling Staffordshire UK
Dave is an audio-visual artist and associate professor, based in Staffordshire UK. His formative research centred on sonification and auditory display and his composition ‘Listen (Awakening)’ was performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the ICAD conference in 2004. His more recent work focuses on composition for Electronic Visual Music fusing digital animation with electronic music. His book on this subject is available through Routledge.

Dave’s compositions have been performed at the Soundings Festival Edinburgh, MANTIS Festival University of Manchester, flEXiff Experimental Film Festival Sydney Australia, Seeing Sound Bath Spa, ICMC Shanghai, NoiseFloor Staffordshire and the Understanding Visual Music Conference in Brasilia, Brazil. Dave also produces more mainstream Electronic music and is From the Floor section editor for Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture.

Kathy High is an interdisciplinary artist, curator and scholar working in bioart, video art and performance art. She collaborates with scientists and activists, and considers living systems, animal sentience, queer ecologies, and the ethical dilemmas of biotechnology and medical industries. She produces films, performances, and conceptual works around issues of gender and technology, and pursues areas of bio-science, waste studies, and environmental justice. She is Professor in the Arts department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, and director of the BioArt and Technology Laboratory in RPI’s Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies. She advises numerous graduate students in the Arts department’s practice-based PhD program. She is also the coordinator of the community science project NATURE Lab with The Sanctuary for Independent Media, a community arts not-for-profit organization which she co-founded. She is committed to queer and feminist approaches to DIY science, environmental justice, and collaborative action.

Her many honors include being the recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation. Her artworks have been shown in museums and galleries in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, China, and throughout the EU, among others. She has had artist residencies with the Asian Society, Hong Kong (2005), Yaddo Artist Colony (2006), SymbioticA, University of Western Australia (2009-10), Finnish Society of Bioart (2013), Coalesce, University of Buffalo (2016-17), Djerassi Scientific Delirium Madness (2019), DePaolo Lab, CMiST, School of Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle (2016-18), Ectopia/Blend, Lisbon (2022), Metabolic Arts Gathering, Copenhagen (2023).
